Many people with Parkinson's Disease find that their symptoms of motor disturbance are exacerbated by stress. This is not surprising when one relialises that adrenaline, the hormone released in response to stress, is metabolised from dopamine - the neuro-transmitter that is deficient in sufferers. Stress also affects gastrointestinal function, pH levels, glycaemic control, cortisol elevation and the immune system.
Both depression and stress will affect people with Parkinson's Disease both from the primary cause of the illness and also from secondary factors such as worry about the disease and its consequences, concerns about the well being of partners and carers, sexual problems, physical pain, fear of "freezing problems with movement and lifestyle concerns.
In addiion to the care from their doctors, it is vital that sufferers have strong psychological support as well as engaging in activities which offer deep mind-body relaxation and the release of excess emotional charge.
We offer both targeted stress counselling and hypnotherapy. In addition, we offer a special Parkinson's disease Autogenic Training package. Autogenic training teaches techniques to achieve deep mind-body relaxation. It offers an invaluable tool for symptom control as well as lowering the blood pressure and heart rate. Please see our page on Autogenic Training for further information.
