Addiction is a state of physiological and psychological dependence on potentially harmful actual or mental stimulants. It is an unhealthy dependence on some substance or activity that is so obsessive that it can destroy the sufferer's life. It is an illness and it can be treated.

Common addictions include alcohol, 'recreational' drugs, prescription medicines, vaporous substances e.g. glue, gambling, shopping, etc. Some obsessive behaviour may also be regarded as an addiction. Contrary to many press reports, an excessive interest in sex is not an addiction but please see our section on Psychosexual Issues if you have a problem in this respect.

In our opinion, there is always an underlying cause of addictions. The tendency to addiction may be a personality trait or it may be a response to lifetime experiences. The surrender to an addiction may also just be an easy way out of problematic situations. Whatever the cause, addictions are highly destructive and can lead to the loss of family life, assets, jobs, friends and often leades to more serious psychological problems.

We treat each patient as an individual case with discrete and unique challenges. As a generalisation we do not believe in what is described as 'rehab', group therapy or 'twelve step plans'. Each patient is encouraged to understand and accept the issues that are facing them. They are then given the tools they need and a life plan that guides them towards recovery. An environment for recovery and the avoidance of their addiction is created and ongoing support - including a help line - is provided.
