Whilst planning a family and the birth of babies is the most natural thing in the world, it is also a step into the unknown for every woman and her partner. While, in most cases, childbirth is problem free, there are cases where problems arise where help beyond that provided by the family doctor or maternity unit are required. They can include:
Difficulties in conceiving
Problems with IVF
Fear of childbirth
Fear of needles or other procedures
Dealing with termination
Dealing with premature death of a baby
Facing ceasarian delivery
Facing multiple births
Postnatal depression
Issues with parental responsibility for new baby
We provide tailored and caring support and the identification and resolution of related psychological problems. Where appropriate, we work with couples and families to understand and work through the psychological problems facing the family. We can also provide counselling and support where there are significant differences of opinion within families about issues relating to childbirth.
Following childbirth we arrange special workshops for couples to help them to recapture passion and intimacy in a safe and caring environment. These can address such problems as:
- readjustment to the family system after a new baby
- lack of intimacy after baby is born
- communication problems between the parents
- keeping passion alive
- maintaining physical contact with each other without transferring it all to baby
- understanding of parental roles
- impact of the birth on each partner
Please also visit the Psychosexual Therapy page if you are concerned about sexual problems arising during pregnancy and after the baby is born.
Don't forget you can always email us if you are not sure whether you need help or not.
